Tuesday, April 22 is Earth Day.
It has been celebrated around the world since 1970 promoting living lightly on the earth.
The LDSS Environment Club would like to share some ideas on what to do in the spirit of Earth Day, every day. By making small steps now you can effect change TODAY.
1. Drive less, walk or bike more.
2. Get a plant for your room.
3. Wash clothes in cold water instead of hot. Heating water takes up a lot of energy.
4. Reuse before you Recycle.
5. Donate to Goodwill.
6. Wash dishes by hand.
7. Avoid Drive-Thrus.
8. Turn off the lights when you leave a room.
9. Change your lights to CFLs.
10. Be Aware of the positive influence you have.
On Saturday March 29 at 8:00 p.m. people around the world will turn off their lights for just
one hour – Earth Hour – to show it is possible to take action on climate change.
Turning off lights is a simple action but one that sends a powerful message that we care about our planet.
The environment club at LDSS wants YOU to get involved. For more information, and to sign up your family or friends, go to Earth Hour

Looking back in time, Mrs. Weir's grade 10 English class made masks and held a masquerade ball as part of their study of Romeo and Juliet. Jumping ahead several centuries, they also enjoyed a visit from Mr. Jeff Reaburn, who taught the class how to use the school's new Smart Board. We hope to make great use of this exciting technology!
Little Shop of Horrors took to the stage January 11-13 for five outstanding performances, including a Friday matinée for elementary school students. The show drew rave reviews from students, staff, parents and the whole community for its slick look, great acting and marvelous music. Thank you for supporting Black Door Theatre and the Arts Department at LDSS! Check out the new performance photos posted in the Little Shop photo album!
In the weeks leading up to Christmas, LDSS raised money for World Vision. The homeforms were challenged to bring in money each week and watch the total grow. In the end, we raised over $2700! A special mention goes to Mrs. Sawchuk's period one class, who raised $811. Way to go LDSS!
Back in April 2007, the Social Sciences Department held a very successful fundraiser whose results were felt halfway around the world. The classes baked dozens and dozens of delicious pies and sent the proceeds -- $750 -- to Slee
ping Children Around the World. Pictured here are some of the 25 children in Tanzania who who each received a bedkit. One such kit is shown with the children; the plastic carrier bag contains: a foam mattress, mattress cover, bed sheet, long lasting insecticide net, school shirt, t-shirt, shorts, towel, flip-flops, 4 exercise books and a pen. These items are treasured by the children who receive them, since for many of them, they represent the means to attend school for the first time. Way to go LDSS!
